The U.S. justice department has formally asked Canada to extradite a Yemeni man languishing in a Toronto jail cell since the terrorist attacks on the United States.
American authorities apparently plan to prosecute Nageeb Al- Hadi- whose luggage contained several passports with different names, as well as Lufthansa airline crew uniforms- for nothing more than passport fraud, since the extradition request makes no mention of September 11, his lawyer, Gary Batasar, said yesterday. “The irony of it all is that he”s been kept in solitary confinement, and there is nothing else (in the request) except for the passport violations”
Al- Hadi, 35, was arrested on a Chicago- bound Lufthansa jet grounded in Toronto on September 11.
Meanwhile, a Syrian refugee faces deportation after being declared a threat to national security as a terrorist tied to Osama bin Laden.
Hassan Almrei, 27, refused to testify yesterday, abruptly ending the hearing and prompting Madam Justice Daniele Tremblay- Lament grant the security certificates.
Canada“s spy agency has alleged Almrei was involved in a foreign ring assisting bin Laden”s networks and operated a honey business that funded bin Laden”s operations.
